The Long Road

The UK has a long way to go in order to reduce its carbon footprint. Although there is rise in awareness of green issues amongst the general public, the UK still lags behind many of its European neighbours (the statistics speak for themselves: http://www.stat.ee/29310), particularly in Scandanavia. However, a significant movement is beginning to rise up and take positive action.

Your carbon footprint

As an exercise, you could calculate your carbon footprint here (http://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx) - you can input your useage of each type of energy in the home, your transport schedule (flights, cars, motorbikes, bus & rail) as well as secondary aspects such as Food preferences (i.e. Organic produce, In season food, Imported food and goods), Fashion, Packaging, Furniture and electricals, Recycling, Recreation, Car manufacture and Finance and other services. You may be shocked by the results!

Household Energy consumption

Obviously, the most important aspect of the calculation and the one that most of us can influence is that of our Household Energy Consumption. What could make a massive dent in the UK Carbon Footprint would be if people could begin to make the switch to renewable energy within the home. Green consciousness has undoubtedly spread amongst the general populace of the UK and many are now becoming aware that the traditional methods of heating the home are no longer viable.

Many of the biggest UK energy providers are now beginning to implement schemes and initiatives that would begin to stamp out the carbon footprint, including Scottish Hydro Electric - who have introduced a scheme (better plan) that would provide 100% Hydro-Electricity at no extra cost, sliencing many of those sceptics who insist that going green is not cost effective.

I was reading an article about the price increase by energy providers and though I would post it here, it's long but a good read.

<h2>Isle of Lewis renewable energy source blocked</h2>

The proposal to build the UK’s largest wind farm was blocked today. Plans to erect 181 wind turbines on the Isle of Lewis were block today according to the BBC1. Locals of Lewis protested against the build fighting off Lewis Wind Farm Limited2 and their local council. Locals argued that the wind farm will negatively affect tourism and disrupt local wild life.
Although renewable energy sources mark our countryside they help to <a href=”http://www.southern-electric.co.uk/Features/Feature.aspx?id=6888”>reduce carbon emissions</a>, which is beneficial for everyone everywhere.
